Wastewater from PV silicon wafer manufacturing is primarily generated during wafer slicing, texturing and cleaning, acid and alkaline polishing, adhesive removal, wafer cutting cooling, and workshop cleaning. It represents the largest source of wastewater throughout the silicon wafer production process.
Unlike solar cell wastewater, silicon wafer wastewater is characterized by high fluoride content, high silica concentration, high turbidity, and alternating acidic and alkaline wastewater streams.
Typical pollutants include fluoride, colloidal suspended silica (SiO₂), acid and alkali salts, trace amounts of cutting fluid residues, and hardness ions such as calcium and magnesium. Although the overall COD level is relatively low, the wastewater contains an exceptionally high concentration of colloidal silica.
The wastewater volume is substantial and subject to significant hydraulic fluctuations. Wafer cutting wastewater contains large quantities of fine silicon particles that readily settle and cause scaling. Alternating discharge of acidic and alkaline cleaning wastewater results in dramatic pH fluctuations and continuously increasing salinity. Without proper treatment, severe scaling, membrane fouling, and excessive fluoride concentrations in the treated effluent can occur.
Wastewater treatment systems must comply with applicable industrial wastewater discharge regulations and reclaimed water reuse standards.
Wastewater treatment in the silicon wafer industry presents several highly specialized challenges.
Conventional treatment processes are generally ineffective at removing ultra-fine colloidal silica, resulting in slow sedimentation, sludge accumulation in equalization tanks, severe membrane fouling, and premature membrane replacement.
Traditional fluoride removal technologies also have limited adaptability to fluctuating wastewater conditions, increasing the risk of exceeding fluoride discharge limits.
Silicon wafer manufacturing requires large volumes of process water, while conventional treatment systems often achieve relatively low water recovery rates, leading to high freshwater consumption and operating costs.
In addition, standardized treatment equipment is frequently unsuitable for the highly acidic, alkaline, scaling-prone, and corrosive operating conditions of wafer manufacturing, resulting in frequent equipment failures and increased maintenance requirements.
As production capacity continues to expand, conventional civil wastewater treatment facilities require large installation areas and offer limited flexibility for capacity upgrades, making them unsuitable for modern, large-scale, continuous silicon wafer manufacturing.
To address the high silica, high fluoride, and high turbidity characteristics of silicon wafer wastewater, we employ a mature treatment process consisting of:
Segregated Collection → Coagulation for Silica & Fluoride Removal → Water Softening → Precision Filtration → Advanced Membrane Water Reuse → Concentrate Volume Reduction
High-turbidity wafer cutting wastewater and acidic/alkaline process wastewater are collected and equalized separately to minimize hydraulic and water quality fluctuations.
A dedicated coagulation and sedimentation system destabilizes colloidal silica while simultaneously achieving highly efficient fluoride removal.
The treated water then passes through sand filtration and activated carbon filtration to remove residual suspended solids and trace organic contaminants.
Finally, an Ultrafiltration (UF) system combined with an anti-fouling Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane system produces high-quality reclaimed water suitable for wafer cleaning and cooling applications.
The remaining concentrate is further treated through volume reduction processes, ensuring long-term stable operation of the entire treatment system.
