Flexible PCB (FPC) wastewater is primarily generated during drilling, electroless copper plating, electroplating, dry and wet etching, developing and stripping, surface finishing, and workshop cleaning processes. Due to diverse production chemicals and frequent process changes, FPC wastewater is recognized as one of the most challenging industrial wastewaters in the precision electronics industry.
The wastewater is generally classified into four categories: complexed heavy metal wastewater, acidic and alkaline etching wastewater, ink-containing organic wastewater, and mixed rinsing wastewater.
Typical contaminants include complexed copper and nickel ions, acids and alkalis, dissolved salts, photoresist resins, organic solvents, surfactants, and suspended fine particles.
Compared with conventional rigid PCB wastewater, FPC manufacturing involves frequent chemical replacement and contains significant amounts of complexing agents such as EDTA and citric acid, resulting in highly stable metal complexes that cannot be effectively removed by conventional precipitation processes. In addition, the wastewater features large COD fluctuations, high color, rapid salt accumulation, and stringent treatment requirements for both removal efficiency and operational stability.
The most critical challenge in FPC wastewater treatment is the removal of complexed heavy metals. Conventional coagulation and precipitation processes are unable to effectively break metal complexes, often leading to excessive copper and nickel concentrations and environmental compliance risks.
Wastewater from photoresist developing and stripping contains high concentrations of refractory organic compounds with poor biodegradability, causing severe shock loads to biological treatment systems and unstable effluent quality.
Frequent production changeovers generate significant fluctuations in wastewater composition and flow rate. Standard treatment systems typically have limited resistance to hydraulic and contaminant shock loads, resulting in pipeline blockage, excessive chemical consumption, and increased sludge production.
In addition, conventional equipment generally lacks sufficient corrosion resistance and anti-clogging capability to withstand aggressive electronic process chemicals, increasing the risk of secondary contamination.
With increasingly compact factory layouts and rapidly expanding production capacity, traditional civil wastewater treatment facilities occupy excessive space and offer limited flexibility for future upgrades. Customized, high-performance treatment systems specifically designed for precision electronics manufacturing are therefore essential.
To address the characteristics of complexed heavy metals, refractory organic pollutants, and highly fluctuating wastewater quality, our solution adopts the following integrated treatment process:
Segregated Collection → Complex-Breaking Treatment → Equalization & Chemical Precipitation → Advanced Oxidation → Biological Treatment → Membrane Reclamation
Different wastewater streams are separately collected and equalized to minimize hydraulic and contaminant shock loading.
Advanced oxidation is employed to destroy stable metal complexes, while specialized heavy metal chelating agents ensure efficient removal of dissolved metal ions.
Coagulation and sedimentation remove suspended solids and colloidal contaminants. A Fenton oxidation process further degrades refractory photoresist organics and significantly reduces COD.
Finally, biological treatment combined with Ultrafiltration (UF) and anti-fouling Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems produces high-quality reclaimed water suitable for reuse in PCB rinsing and cleaning operations.

Its modular design enables easy expansion, fully automated operation, and long-term adaptability to evolving FPC manufacturing capacity.
We have extensive experience delivering wastewater treatment solutions for Flexible PCB manufacturing facilities.
A representative reference project involved a high-end FPC manufacturing wastewater recycling system with a treatment capacity of 900 m³/day, designed to treat mixed wastewater from etching, electroplating, and photoresist developing processes.
The system successfully resolved persistent issues including excessive complexed heavy metals, unstable COD removal, and equipment fouling, while maintaining reliable year-round operation and successfully passing environmental compliance inspections and customer acceptance testing.
